Something Rotten! is currently in previews on Broadway at the St. James Theatre. It is being billed as “the musical about the first musical.” It is a comedic farce about two brothers struggling to best William Shakespeare in the realm of theatre—complete with Shakespeare in the Park, Puritans, and a musical about an Omelet (don’t ask—just go see it!).
It was a fun night and there was much laughter, starting from the very beginning to the very end. Brian D’Arcy James, John Cariani, and Christian Borle lead a wonderful cast and you can tell that the actors are having a great time—honestly there were times when I wasn’t sure how they could deliver some of their lines without laughing.
There is one caveat, however: the majority of the jokes and songs and plots and hilarity comes from knowing Broadway productions. As such, newbies to the world of musical theatre might be feel a bit lost from time to time.
If you looking for lighthearted theatrical fun, look no further than Something Rotten! I think their website sums it up best—
