Giving Thanks.

Dear Friends,

We wanted to take a moment to wish you and your family a wonderful and happy Thanksgiving.

The tradition was started in the year 1621 when the surviving Pilgrims on the Mayflower celebrated a fruitful harvest and 90 members of a neighboring Wampanoag tribe joined in the celebration and feast. It was first declared a holiday by the Continental Congress in 1777.

While the holiday has changed significantly over the last 400 years, we hope that however you may celebrate, the spirit of thankfulness and love for our neighbors will rule the day.

Imagine how different our country might have been if the Wampanoag had refused to help the Pilgrims that first winter?

It seems today, more than ever, we all could use a little reminding of our history in this country and that apart from a very small minority of Americans, everyone’s ancestors hailed from some place far away. But let us not speak of politics, let us focus on the positive, on the love, and on the spirit of what Thanksgiving means.

Summer Update

Dear Friends,

We hope this finds you well and enjoying your summer! We cannot believe how quickly it has passed by—but here we are in mid-August and we wanted to share with you a few updates.

Our new play Adoption Roulette, which we are featuring for our Centennial Celebrations next year, will be having readings in Connecticut in the next few weeks. We are so excited that there has been so much interest and support in this important play about a Connecticut couple trying to adopt a child in Russia. It is good, and we cannot wait to move it forward! In addition to readings, we are actively looking for an actress to play the main character. More details as things progress.

In other news, it’s that time of the year when we pack it up and head down the coast with our family for a bit of r&r before our granddaughters go back to school. During this time, we’ll take the opportunity to resend some past Newsletters of interest.

That’s the news from here!

Happy summer!

Spreading The Word of The Musical

Dear Friends,

As our Twitter followers know, last week we braved the cold, rainy New York weather and went to see one of the most popular shows on Broadway: The Book of Mormon.

We won lottery tickets and thought we’d take the opportunity to share our love of musicals with our granddaughters.book of mormon 2

The show was entertaining and kept the audience laughing throughout! Although I (Philip) do have to confess, of all the billions of ideas for a musical—I would have never imagined one about Mormon missionaries to Africa could be so successful!

As Ben Brantley from NY Times explains in his latest review:

But gosh darn it if I didn’t feel born again all over again, ready to spread the word about the faith that this show preaches and, more important, practices. I do not mean the religion of the followers of Joseph Smith, which is so scrupulously disassembled here, but the holy faith of musical comedy, into which my mama baptized me before I could walk.

You can read Mr. Brantley’s full interview here.

The Book of Mormon is currently showing at the Eugene O’Neill Theatre at 230 49th Street. To learn more and/or purchase tickets, click here.

We know that our granddaughters had a marvelous time and could not stop talking about it—so the evening was a success!

Best regards,
Philip & Marilyn

Summer Vacation!

Dear Friends,

It’s that time of the year—the last weeks of summer when we pack up and head down to the Jersey Shore with our daughter and two granddaughters for 10 days of beachside views and a happy vacation!

As we do every year, we thought we would repost a couple of our favorite newsletters that we have shared with you in the past, so that our newest members can read them as well.  But first we thought we’d leave you with a picture of one of our cats, Undine, who is obviously ready for vacation!

Best regards!

The Beach is Calling!

Dear Friends,

It’s that fabulous time of year when summer winds down and we have only a short bit of time before the school year and theatre season starts.  So we do what we always do:  pack our bags and our granddaughters and head down to the beach!

It’s a little spot not too far away, however, it feels like it is a world away from the hustle and bustle of New York City.  We use the time to do a lot of reading, listening to waves, and spending time with the family.

Of course not to leave you without, we will be reposting some of our earlier stuff in case you missed it the first time around.

Until we return—we hope you enjoy these last few weeks of summer!

PL and MC

Best regards,

Philip & Marilyn
