Show Boat

Dear Friends,

The other night we saw one of our favorite musicals on television: Showboat.

show boat 1951

This film was produced in 1951, starring Kathryn Grayson, Ava Gardner, and Howard Keel and directed by George Sidney. It was based on the original Broadway musical written by Oscar Hammerstein II with music by Jerome Kern. It tells the story of late 19th century hijinks aboard a Mississippi River show boat. It features some of Broadway’s greatest show tunes including Ol’ Man River, Can’t Help Lovin’ Dat Man, and Make Believe.

This musical is so superb that it makes us want to discuss the importance of theatre in our lives. We seldom think about it, but what if, at 5:30pm every night after a day of work, we simply had dinner and went to bed? Our workdays are usually not very spiritual or uplifting, so it is at nighttime and weekends that we get to observe and participate in the “finer things in life,” as in “what are we living for?” So this film says it all!

It’s wonderful and we’re so glad to have seen it on television! If you want to see it, it is available to watch via streaming or to purchase on Amazon (click here )

Best wishes,
Philip & Marilyn Langner

Prince on Broadway

Dear Friends,

In December we posted the news about our recommendation for this week in our Summer Series: Prince of Broadway.  It is currently in previews and will open August 24th.

It is a musical that celebrates the career of Broadway legend, and our dear friend, Harold Prince.

In fact, when we wrote Hal to wish him the best of success, he very kindly replied that he considers himself “a continuum of everything Lawrence and Armina Langner gave to the theatre. They were my idols and I remember them not only for their extraordinary accomplishments, but their generosity. As a kid, they always made me feel welcomed and encouraged me.”

Over the span of his career, Hal has received 21 Tony Awards, a Kennedy Center Honor, and a National Medal of the Arts from President Clinton.  His long list of productions have helped shape Broadway with shows such as Fiddler on The Roof, Damn Yankees, West Side Story, A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum, Sweeney Todd, Evita, The Phantom of the Opera, Cabaret, Follies, A Little Night Music, and Show Boat to name a few!

Prince of Broadway

Dear Friends,

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!

Today we received a check from Fiddler on the Roof, one of many hit plays produced by famed Broadway producer, Harold Prince.

We invested in Fiddler in 1964 and to date, it has earned profits of more than $15 million over the last 50 years!  Our profits are more than 30 times our initial investment over this time period!

Every check that we receive makes us very happy—and we strongly urge you to consider play investing as a way to expand your theatre pleasure.  While there are risks and certainly no guarantees for a hit, we feel that investing in plays and musicals is a great way to support the arts and your community and is very much an enjoyable investment when you pick a hit!

If you would like to learn more about play investing, we suggest that you contact The Broadway League—the governing body of Broadway plays.

The other thing that came to mind when we received our check is that Harold Prince is now producing a new play on Broadway—Prince of Broadway, which is a tribute to his glorious 60 year career.  Prince of Broadway is set to open in August 2017 and it “examines the circumstances and fortune, both good and bad, that led him to creating some of the most beloved theater of all time.”

In addition to Fiddler on the Roof, some of Harold’s many productions include:

Damn Yankees

West Side Story

A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum

Sweeney Todd

Evita

The Phantom of the Opera

Cabaret

Follies

A Little Night Music

Show Boat
