Sunrise at Campobello

Dear Friends,

Since we’ve been celebrating American history all week, we thought we’d share this post with you again, as it is where history and theatre intersect!

The Theatre Guild Newsletter

Certainly one of the most exciting plays we ever produced was Sunrise at Campobello, the story of Franklin D. Roosevelt during the early 1920s.

We were extremely happy when Dore Schary, a prominent head of MGM, decided to leave Hollywood to concentrate on writing and producing plays in New York!

His first play, Sunrise, was excellent!  We opened the play on what would have been Roosevelt’s 76th birthday—January 30, 1958.  It was directed by Vincent J. Donehue and starred Ralph Bellamy as Roosevelt, along with Mary Fickett, Henry Jones, Anne Seymour, Mary Welch, Alan Bunce and more!

The play ran for 16 months with 556 spectacular performances.  It was nominated for 6 Tonys in 1958 and won Best Play, Best Actor, Best Director…

  • Best Play (winner)
  • Outstanding Actor in a Play—Ralph Bellamy (winner)
  • Direction—Vincent J. Donehue (winner)

Broadway Karaoke

Dear Friends,

To help set the stage for tomorrow night’s Tony Awards, we found this wonderful YouTube video with this year’s host, James Corden, and special guests Lin-Manuel Miranda, Jesse Tyler Ferguson, Audra McDonald, and Jane Krakowski singing a variety of songs, such as from Hamilton, Rent, and Les Miserables.

We hope you enjoy it as much as we did—it sure looked like they had fun making it!

Regards,

Philip & Marilyn

Hamilton Rising!

Dear Friends,

Hamilton continues to be perhaps the most stunningly successful play of our lifetimes!

hamilton official

The big news yesterday was that it received 16 Tony Award Nominations—the largest number in Tony History, which goes back 70 years!

For all of us in the theatre, we don’t recall any initial success as big as this.

The closest that come to mind are Fiddler on The Roof and My Fair Lady.  Of course, it is hard to compare these plays accurately, as all of the great hits prior to Hamilton occurred in the pre-social media/internet world and did not have the instant world-wide publicity and acclaim that Hamilton enjoys.

Today we wanted to share with you another manifestation of Hamilton’s popularity:

The book “Hamilton Revolution,” which is a behind the scenes look at making the musical and written by Hamilton author Lin-Manual Miranda and cultural critic Jeremy McCarter, is flying off the shelves!

In fact, the New York Times quips (quite correctly) that getting the book isn’t any easier than getting a ticket!  The book, which came out on April 12th, is now in its second printing and it estimated to have 400,000 copies in print by the summer!

It seems we just can’t get enough!  Congrats to Miranda and the entire cast and crew of Hamilton on their 16 Tony nominations!

Best regards,

Philip & Marilyn
